Brighton’s Mental Health Walks for Kids
Fri 19 Jul 2024
Brighton is taking a wonderful step towards supporting the mental health of its younger residents with the launch of free mental health walks for children. Wandering Emotions, a local initiative, is dedicated to educating young people about mental health through engaging and interactive outdoor activities.
These walks, designed for children aged five to 12, are a fantastic way to help kids connect with their emotions while enjoying the great outdoors. Accompanied by their parents, children will participate in a variety of games and activities crafted by mental health professionals. One of the standout activities is the "five senses check-in," where children explore their surroundings using their senses of sight, touch, hearing, smell, and taste. This activity also encourages them to focus on their breathing, aiding in self-regulation and mindfulness.
Wandering Emotions co-director Abbie Chay, who organises and runs these walks, emphasises the importance of children understanding and regulating their emotions. “It is so important for children to understand and regulate their emotions and feel safe to talk about their mental health,” says Abbie. “It’s great to see them learning how to do so while having fun outside in nature. Running the Wandering Emotions walks and seeing both the children and adults enjoy getting involved in the activities reassures me that this is the perfect way to help families feel confident to talk about mental health in a fun and supportive environment.”
The first set of walks will take place in Hove Park on July 20 and Queens Park on July 24, with more dates to be added throughout the summer. This initiative is a brilliant opportunity for families to bond, learn, and support each other in a beautiful, natural setting.
