Brighton & Hove is famous for its seafront, Regency architecture and familiar landmarks, but some of the most fascinating pieces of Brighton & Hove history are hidden in plain sight.

Tucked between busy streets, behind rows of houses and connecting neighbourhoods across the city are twittens, hidden passages and historic shortcuts that have been used by Brighton & Hove locals for generations. Some are so easy to miss you could walk past them every day without noticing, while others still provide surprisingly useful shortcuts through the city.

These narrow pathways offer a glimpse into Brighton & Hove’s past, showing how people moved around the area long before modern roads, cars and sat navs changed the way we travel. While the streets and neighbourhoods surrounding them have evolved enormously, many of these old routes have quietly remained.
