Nestled in the heart of Brighton, Afrori Books is more than just a bookshop; it’s a beacon of culture, community, and creativity. Founded by the visionary Carolynn Bain, Afrori Books is the UK’s only independent bookshop dedicated to showcasing the works of Black authors. As it races to sell 1,000 books before the end of April, the shop is on a mission to secure its future and continue its vital role in the community.
Emerging from the surge of the Black Lives Matter movement, Afrori began as an online haven for readers seeking diverse voices. With the support of a successful crowdfunding campaign, Carolynn opened a physical store in 2021, transforming Afrori into a nationally recognised cultural hub. However, like many independent businesses, Afrori faces challenges in the current economic climate.
Carolynn passionately explains that Afrori is not just a bookshop but a community sanctuary. It’s a place where choirs harmonise, Black hair education workshops enlighten, and foster carers find solace over a cup of tea. Afrori is a safe space where people feel seen and welcomed, a sentiment echoed by loyal customers.
Supporting Afrori means more than just buying a book. It’s about preserving a platform for Black authors and ensuring that readers across the UK can access stories where they see themselves reflected. Afrori’s campaign encourages people to purchase books, gift cards, or subscription boxes, or to simply spread the word on social media.
At Sawyer & Co, we understand the importance of community spaces like Afrori Books. Just as we strive to find the perfect home for our clients, Afrori provides a literary home for those seeking diverse narratives. Let’s rally together to support this invaluable Brighton gem!
