Brighton and Hove are making waves as one of the UK’s clean air champions! Our vibrant city has seen a remarkable 41% reduction in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from 2017 to 2024, according to research by electric vehicle charge point operator, Believ. This achievement places us as the second-best performing local authority in the UK for air quality improvement.
Councillor Trevor Muten, our dedicated cabinet member for transport and city infrastructure, proudly highlights the significant air quality improvements. He emphasises the importance of reducing PM2.5, a major environmental risk, by focusing on cleaner transport and reducing domestic burning of solid fuels.
Brighton and Hove boast the best public EV charging coverage outside London, with ambitious plans to expand further. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. While we’ve already surpassed the government’s 2030 target for PM2.5, we continue to strive for the more challenging World Health Organisation (WHO) targets.
Guy Bartlett, CEO of Believ, praises Brighton and Hove’s leadership in clean air improvement, showcasing how local actions can deliver tangible results. Councillor Muten reinforces our commitment to cleaner transport and reducing car miles. Our recent expansion of Smoke Control Areas aims to tackle pollution from domestic burning, covering the entire urban area by winter 2026.
As we continue to enhance our city’s air quality, we’re proud to be part of this positive change. If you’re considering making Brighton and Hove your home, our team at Sawyer & Co is here to help you find your perfect spot in this thriving, environmentally-conscious community. Let’s breathe easy and enjoy the benefits of cleaner air together!
