Brighton and Hove’s vibrant community spirit shone brightly as Councillor Amanda Grimshaw, the mayor, celebrated the tireless efforts of volunteers and community workers at the Hangleton and Knoll Project. This leading grassroots group, a cornerstone of the local community for over 40 years, has been a beacon of support for numerous community groups in the area.
The highlight of the celebration was the announcement of the Weller Youth Centre’s opening in Knoll Park. This dedicated youth centre stands as a testament to years of fundraising and hard work, named in honour of the project’s founder, Patricia Weller, and her late husband, David. It marks a significant milestone in the project’s history, offering a safe and nurturing space for the youth of Brighton and Hove.
Councillor Grimshaw, who represents Hangleton and Knoll, expressed her admiration for the project’s achievements, particularly as it extends its reach to Portslade in collaboration with Portslade Together and Clarion housing association. The event, held at St Richard’s Church Hall, was graced by fellow ward councillors Faiza Baghoth and John Hewitt, adding a personal touch to the celebration.
The project’s annual general meeting (AGM) was not just a formal affair but a joyous celebration, featuring a lively street dance performance by local youngsters. Last year alone, the project engaged with 500 children and young people, alongside 3,000 adults, showcasing its far-reaching impact.
The AGM also highlighted the commendable efforts of volunteers leading a men’s wellbeing group, further exemplifying the project’s commitment to community welfare. At Sawyer & Co, we’re proud to be part of such a thriving community and are always here to help with your property needs.
