Hangleton is set to resonate with the melodious sounds of brass as the Hangleton Band marks its 60th anniversary with a grand concert. Founded in 1965 by the late Hubert Osgood, the band has grown into a vibrant community with about 80 members across its youth and senior ensembles.
Under the baton of Richard Baker, who first joined the band as a five-year-old, the Hangleton Band has become a local institution. Richard, who has dedicated 16 years to conducting both bands, emphasises the social and personal growth opportunities the band offers. From honing musical skills to fostering teamwork and leadership, the band is a nurturing ground for young and old alike.
The anniversary concert, set for Saturday 10 May at Bishop Hannington Church, promises to be a spectacular event. Both the junior and senior bands will perform world premieres, including “Xylo-Bone Circus” by percussionist Xavier and former member Ben, and an arrangement of “I Don’t Like Mondays” by Dave Glasson, a piece rich in history and personal connections.
Dave Glasson, who taught Richard Baker and many band members during the 1980s and 90s, shares a touching story of musical legacy. His grandson, Cosmo, now plays in the Youth Band, bringing the arrangement full circle as he performs under Richard’s direction.
The concert is more than just a musical event; it’s a celebration of community, history, and the enduring bonds formed through music. As the band continues to thrive, it reflects the vibrant spirit of Hangleton, a place where history and modernity harmoniously coexist.
