If you’re looking for a unique way to boost your mental health while also improving your climbing skills, the new Climbing Free course in Brighton might just be the perfect fit for you. Created by local therapist Stephanie Fitchett, this innovative course combines the physical challenge of climbing with therapeutic reflection, offering a holistic approach to mental wellbeing.
Running from 14 April to 2 June, the Climbing Free course consists of eight weekly sessions, each including 90 minutes of climbing followed by a 45-minute reflective practice. During these sessions, participants will not only learn the skills needed to climb independently but also explore how their experiences on the wall relate to life outside the climbing setting.
Stephanie explains that the emotions climbers experience often mirror those explored in therapy. The course delves into how we communicate, manage pressure and fear, and listen to our bodies, providing a tangible way to explore our sense of self and relationships with others.
Climbing Therapy is gaining popularity as a method to support mental wellbeing, and Climbing Free takes this a step further by creating a space for reflection on the climbing experience. This process can reveal how individuals respond to pressure and the balance between depending on others and ourselves.
With a maximum of eight participants per group, the course offers an intimate setting for personal growth and development. The cost is £200 for the full eight weeks, and sessions take place at High Sports Brighton on Tuesdays from 10am to 12.30pm.
