Brighton and Hove’s seafront could soon be one of the UK’s most spectacular, according to Labour deputy leader Jacob Taylor. The city council’s Seafront Development Board is crafting a prospectus to attract investment and transform the coastline. This ambitious plan involves councillors and industry experts, aiming to create a unique and vibrant seaside experience.

The board is seeking input from residents, with a survey asking locals how they currently use the seafront and what improvements they desire. Councillor Taylor envisions a seafront with assets and attractions that set it apart from others, making it genuinely exciting.

The long-neglected Black Rock site is earmarked for redevelopment, potentially hosting events like the Brighton Festival and World Cup fan zone. However, concerns have been raised about Brighton Marina, where several national chains have closed. Mark Strong from Community Works emphasised the need for local businesses to thrive, keeping money circulating within the community.

The council’s director of place, Max Woodford, acknowledged the challenges at the Marina and stressed the importance of integrating it with the seafront. Councillor Birgit Miller highlighted the Marina’s partnership with the council, aiming to complement developments at Black Rock.

Councillor Anne Meadows raised concerns about ensuring attractions remain accessible to all residents, not just the wealthier ones. Councillor Taylor assured that the seafront would continue to be a largely free attraction, with some paid-for experiences.

Independent councillor Mark Earthey noted the undercliff’s contribution to active travel but highlighted ongoing issues with storm debris. The council is considering investing in equipment to maintain the area.
