The vibrant North Laine district in Brighton has a fresh, colourful gateway thanks to a new mural. This artistic addition aims to guide visitors through the city’s lively independent shopping area, encouraging a scenic stroll to the sea.
In a creative collaboration, Southern Rail, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, artist SinnaOne, and the Brighton Toy and Model Museum have transformed the underpass beneath Brighton Station. The 10-metre-long mural, crafted by local young artists, showcases Brighton’s unique biodiversity and cultural landmarks. It’s part of the Grow Wild on the Railway initiative, designed to connect young locals with station partners and highlight native UK plants and fungi.
Tom Easdown, Southern’s Head of Stations, emphasised the importance of this initiative. He noted that while the sea is a short walk from the station, the North Laine’s creative district offers a rich, alternative route. The mural, funded by Southern’s Your Station, Your Community scheme, aims to draw more foot traffic to this area, celebrating its vibrant community spirit.
The Brighton Toy and Model Museum also played a significant role in this transformation. With additional funding from the Community Rail Network, the museum has revamped its entrance and underpass, enhancing the area’s appeal with improved lighting and a welcoming atmosphere.
Jan Etches, Manager of the Brighton Toy and Model Museum, expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its role in fostering local pride and creativity. The mural complements the museum’s regeneration efforts, making the station approach more inviting.
As Brighton celebrates 50 years since the North Laine was saved from demolition, this mural stands as a testament to the area’s resilience and creativity. For those exploring Brighton, this scenic route promises a delightful journey through the heart of the city’s independent spirit.
