Brighton Schools Cultivate Green Thumbs Together

In the vibrant city of Brighton & Hove, five primary schools are sowing the seeds of change, quite literally! Thanks to the generous support from Little Tums, a local catering service for nurseries, these schools are embarking on an exciting year-long journey to cultivate food-growing spaces within their grounds. St Martin’s CE Primary, Aldrington CE Primary, St Andrew’s CE Primary, Brunswick Primary, and Saltdean Primary are leading the way in this green initiative.

This innovative project is more than just planting seeds; it’s about nurturing a generation. Teachers are being trained in essential growing skills, empowering them to guide children through the entire process—from planting beans and berries to harvesting salad and strawberries. The joy of watching a seed transform into something edible is an invaluable lesson in patience, responsibility, and sustainability.

The benefits extend beyond the garden. As UNESCO recently highlighted, the work at Goldstone Primary, led by horticulturalist Ruth Chalker, is a shining example of how such programmes can enrich education. Ruth emphasizes that gardening is an inclusive activity where every child finds their niche, fostering teamwork, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for nature.

This initiative is part of the broader Our City, Our World environmental programme, supported by the Brighton & Hove Food Partnership. It’s not just about growing food; it’s about growing healthier, more environmentally conscious children. With one in three children leaving primary school overweight, these projects are vital for promoting healthier lifestyles.

Councillor Tim Rowkins praises these initiatives for providing hands-on experiences that teach children about food origins, healthy eating, and sustainability. With the support of community volunteers, these schools are transforming into living classrooms.
