Brighton Half Marathon: Youth Races Shine

The Brighton Half Marathon weekend kicked off with vibrant youth races at Hove Lawns, setting a spirited tone for the event.

The sun smiled down on Hove Lawns as young runners, aged seven to 17, took to the seafront for the Brighton Half Marathon’s youth races. Excitement filled the air as parents cheered on their little athletes, who tackled the one-mile route with gusto.

The day began with the seven to eight-year-olds, where Chloe Mullins, an enthusiastic triathlete from Haywards Heath, clinched the top spot. Chloe, who adores swimming, described the race as “really good,” much to the delight of her proud mum, Suzi. “I’m really proud of her; there’s been a lot of hard work gone into this,” Suzi beamed.

In the boys’ race, eager young runners had to be held back at the start line. Henry Robinson, inspired by Olympians treated by his osteopath dad, Dave, sprinted to second place. “He loves running,” Dave shared, adding, “Today was amazing, and it’s good to see everyone out.”

Tomorrow, the excitement continues as approximately 10,000 runners will participate in the half marathon. Starting at 9.30am from Hove Lawns, the route will showcase Brighton’s iconic landmarks. The Yeomans Toyota wheelchair race will precede the main event, with comedian Joe Wilkinson as the official starter.

Familiar faces like DS Chris Oliver, actor Craig Parkinson, and broadcaster Bobby Seagull will join the race, supporting The Sussex Beacon’s Formula Milk Programme. The Brighton-based HIV charity, owner of the marathon since 1990, relies on this event as its biggest annual fundraiser.
