Barnacle Bill: Turtle’s Journey Home

Barnacle Bill, a loggerhead sea turtle, is set to return to the wild near the Azores after a remarkable rescue journey. Found washed ashore in Guernsey following Storm Ciarán, she was covered in barnacles and weighed less than 1kg. Thanks to the dedicated care of the Guernsey Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) and Sea Life Brighton, Barnacle Bill now weighs over 13kg and is ready to swim free once more.

Loggerhead turtles, classified as vulnerable by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), face numerous threats. Their nesting beaches are increasingly endangered by tourism development, and they are often accidentally caught in fishing nets. Barnacle Bill’s story highlights the importance of conservation efforts and the vital role of rescue centres in protecting these magnificent creatures.

After initial care in Guernsey, Barnacle Bill was transferred to Sea Life Brighton in 2024 due to export paperwork challenges. This move marked Sea Life Brighton’s first turtle release since opening, showcasing their commitment to marine conservation. Curator Joe Williams emphasised the importance of contacting rescue teams if turtles are found stranded, as returning them to the sea could be fatal.

As Barnacle Bill prepares for her journey home, her story serves as a reminder of the incredible work done by organisations like Sea Life Brighton and the GSPCA. For those of us who love our local marine life, it’s heartening to see such dedication to preserving these vulnerable species.
