Brighton Teen Triumphs at Film Awards

A Brighton teenager has scooped a prestigious national film award, shining a spotlight on her family’s poignant journey from Tehran to the UK. Sixteen-year-old Rosie clinched the Best Documentary accolade at the 2025 Into Film Awards with her moving film, “Freedom of the Sea.” This remarkable documentary delves into her family’s emigration story following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, capturing the challenges of adapting to a new cultural, social, and linguistic landscape.

Rosie describes “Freedom of the Sea” as a deeply personal project, offering her a chance to explore the joys and struggles her family faced in their quest for freedom. “This award means a lot to me because it was my first film, and it’s great to be recognised by Into Film,” she shared. Her film beautifully highlights the newfound liberties her family discovered, symbolised by the simple act of swimming in the sea—a privilege they cherish in their new home.

The awards ceremony, graced by celebrities such as Hugh Grant and Olivia Cooke, celebrated the creativity of young filmmakers. Host Rose Ayling-Ellis expressed her admiration for the young talents, emphasising the importance of giving them a platform to share their voices through filmmaking.

Fiona Evans, chief executive of Into Film, highlighted the significance of nurturing young talent within the UK film industry. These awards underscore the industry’s commitment to valuing and believing in the voices of the next generation.

As we celebrate Rosie’s success, we at Sawyer & Co are inspired by the stories of resilience and new beginnings. Whether you’re embarking on a new chapter or seeking a fresh start, we’re here to help you find your perfect home.
