Theatre Royal Brighton’s Grand Restoration Unveiled
Mon 03 Jun 2024
Brighton’s beloved Theatre Royal has unveiled its stunning restoration, showcasing a beautiful new terracotta colonnade and balcony. This historic gem, one of the UK's oldest theatres, has been meticulously restored over the past 17 months, with more than 1,551 sections of the colonnade façade installed. Visitors can now enjoy a drink outdoors under the colonnade or on the balcony above, adding a touch of elegance to their theatre experience.
Theatre Royal Brighton, first established in 1807, has a long and rich history of hosting plays, musicals, and even podcasts. The first production, Shakespeare's Hamlet, opened on June 26, 1807, and the theatre has been in almost continuous operation ever since. This latest restoration not only preserves the theatre’s architectural beauty but also enhances the comfort and experience for modern audiences.
ATG Entertainment, the theatre's owners, have also restored the beloved Colonnade Bar underneath, replacing many interior fixtures and adding a new door linking the box office entrance with the bar for pre and post-show drinks. Theatre director Sophie Denney expressed her pride in the restoration, stating, "This investment not only improves the experience of everyone visiting our venue in the present but also protects the theatre for future generations to enjoy."
Inside the auditorium, new seating with fold-up armrests makes accessing middle seats easier, while the seats, toilets, electrics, and decor have all been refreshed. The theatre’s new logo, designed by Brighton agency Good Noise, symbolises a curtain or fly ropes on stage, perfectly matching the venue’s historic charm.
To celebrate the restoration, Theatre Royal Brighton will host a month-long festival called CollyFest from June 16 to July 14. During this period, the main stage will be closed for maintenance, but a temporary space in the foyer will buzz with music, quizzes, and workshops. Senior creative learning manager Jackie Alexander shared her excitement, saying, "I can't wait to meet more members of our local community and show off all our beautiful theatre has to offer."
The restoration of Theatre Royal Brighton is a testament to the city’s dedication to preserving its cultural heritage while enhancing the experience for all who visit. Whether you're a local or a visitor, the Theatre Royal Brighton promises a blend of historic charm and modern comfort, making it a must-visit destination in the heart of Brighton.
